GUERNICA ART ANALYSIS PROJECT
GUERNICA ART ANALYSIS PROJECT
1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail.
- This artwork by Pablo Picasso is named Guernica. Based off the readings I know this image is a monochromatic color scheme. A Monochromatic color scheme is all the colors of a single hue. This painting is a grayscale. With the drawings so close to one another in the painting it gives a cluttered effect.
2. What processes were used to create this work? What social influences might the artist be responding to and why?
- With a painting such as this one I can only imagine the process used to create such a piece. After some research I learned this piece was created to have a matte look, as instructed by picasso himself. Picasso was taught an essential technique called Cameraless Photographs which helped him record his findings. It took picasso 35 days of working on this piece to achieve the perfect mixture of both black and white he wanted.
3. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship.
- The relationship of this art piece to the time and society it was created in, may be the reason for the color photos were taken in during this time. At this time photos were taken in black and white. In spanish cultures both horses and bulls have great impacts on the culture.
4. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why.
- My initial thoughts when viewing this image weren't the best. I couldn't help but think of what could possibly be throwing this photo off, as I continued to analyze the image I noticed the facial expression on each individuals face, was filled with discomfort/sadness. As I looked at this image as a whole I tried piecing everything together. I noticed a mother holding a baby in hear arms as she falls to her knees in sorrow. The child seems to be lifeless.
5. Evaluate what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the work. Apply discipline specific vocabulary and concepts when describing your point of view.
Strengths: Symbols, distortion, confusion, exaggeration are all included in the painting making it clear what Picasso hoped to convey to his viewers, which was the massive destruction of wars.
Weaknesses: The separation of the heads from the bodies and how clustered everything things made it hard to try and decipher the image.
