Module 10

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

African Art:

- I chose Africa art because of family history, my family is Nigerian a country in west Africa. I was interesting in learning more about its art.

Buddhism:

- I chose Buddhism because of a special interest with the chinese culture. Although I know Buddhism isn’t only practiced in china, it is the first country I think of when I think of Buddha. By picking this video I hoped to broaden my understanding for the religion.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

African Art:

- In the video I found a few things mentioned interesting. I was amazed by how their materials are created. I learned they hand make all their tools. Also I found out they don’t have art greater than 200 years old, this was due to storing in harsh weather conditions. In African cultures mask play a significant role. Different mask has different meanings and are used in theatre and rituals.

Buddhism:

- I found it fascinating that there’s two parts to Buddhism, consisting of Monks and Mahayana. Also I learned with Buddhism they practice many healing methods including mediation. Buddhism assist with healing of  the mind and soul. Lastly, I learned the Chuang Yen Monastery is a Buddhist artifact found in Upstate New York.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

African Art:

- The book and the video both discuss important points. Although the information given in both the text and video are important I noticed in the text they talked more about location of where African art had began, while the video provided better visuals.

Buddhism:

- This weeks reading and videos seemed to provide the same content. I wouldn’t say learning from the video was easier than reading from the book, because both related important information differently.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

African Art:

- The video added great depth to my understanding due to the amounts of examples provided in the video. They providing me with meaning behind the different pieces of art, related to their culture.

Buddhism:

-I liked the Buddhism video because of how informative it was. I had the chance to learn way more on the practices of buddhism.
